Suspend, wake, and battery drain
Observe whether the system sleeps, wakes, and keeps its devices.
Based on public documentation; not hardware-tested. Match the instructions to your version and hardware.
Separate three failures
Section titled “Separate three failures”- Never really sleeps: fans or activity continue.
- Sleeps but will not wake: input and the power button do not restore the session normally.
- Wakes with missing devices: the desktop returns, but Wi-Fi, audio, or a dock does not.
Suspend and hibernation are different paths. Do not assume that success in one verifies the other.
Run a short, observable test
Section titled “Run a short, observable test”Save work. Record battery level, power connection, attached peripherals, and the time. Test while present, with enough charge to recover, rather than leaving an unverified setup in a bag overnight.
Try without a dock or external devices, then add them back one at a time. Record which change reintroduces the symptom.
Collect evidence
Section titled “Collect evidence”For the current boot:
journalctl -b -p warning --no-pagerAfter rebooting from a failure, the previous boot may be available:
journalctl -b -1 -p warning --no-pagerPrevious-boot logs depend on journal retention. Remove personal information before sharing.
Choose a temporary routine
Section titled “Choose a temporary routine”Until behavior is reliable, save your work and use a shutdown routine you have verified. Follow the official sleep guide for supported configuration options; hardware-specific kernel changes need matching evidence.
